Über den Autor
John Locke (1632-1704) was een Engels filosoof, arts en politiek denker en geldt als een van de invloedrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de Verlichting en grondleggers van het klassieke liberalisme. Zijn ideeën over natuurlijke rechten, eigendom, religieuze verdraagzaamheid, constitutioneel bestuur en de instemming van het volk hebben de ontwikkeling van de moderne democratische rechtsstaat diepgaand beïnvloed. Zijn werk vormde een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor onder meer de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring, de Franse Verlichting en het hedendaagse denken over vrijheid, mensenrechten en beperkt bestuur.
