Clouds without us being aware of it have an elementary significance for us. We inscribe our wishes, hopes and fears into their fleeting, indeter­m­inate diversity. The artistic »discovery« of the cloud began in the Middle Ages and intensified in the 19th century, parallel to its growing importance in the natural sciences and humanities. In the ­con-text of globalisation, virtualisation and 20th century theory, the cloud is now developing into a model for describing the complexity of contem­p­orary condi­tions. It is becoming a symbol of ­networked information architecture, geopolitical relations, and new concepts of space. It is well-known, after all, that clouds do not stop at borders. The exhibition as well as the book »The Clouds and the Cloud« deals with the phenomenon of the cloud from a contemporary perspective. In doing so, it goes much further than the customary cloud images. Using a variety of media, the contributions range from artistic translations of the natural motif to the technical infrastructure of the clouds and their affects. The works presented combine eco­logical, socio-political, economic and technological aspects. The focus is on exploring the various perceptions, materialities and functions of the cloud(s) today.

Les nuages ont sans même que nous en soyons conscients une signification fondamentale pour nous. Nous inscrivons dans leur nature volatile et leur variété indéfinie nos désirs, nos espoirs et nos craintes. La « découverte » artistique du nuage se poursuit depuis le Moyen-âge, plus marquée au XIXe siècle, parallèlement à son importance croissante pour les sciences naturelles et humaines. Dans le cadre des efforts théoriques entrepris au XXe siècle, le nuage évolue vers un rôle de modèle qui permet de saisir la complexité des situations actuelles. Il devient le symbole d une architecture de l information connectée, de relations géopolitiques et de nouvelles représentations de l espace. Car on sait que les nuages ne s arrêtent pas aux frontières. L exposition et le livre « Nuages et nuée » traitent le phénomène nuageux dans une perspective qui permet de voir plus loin que les images traditionnelles de nuages. Les contributions ont recours aux médias les plus divers et vont de la transposition artistique du motif naturel à l infrastructure technique du « cloud » et de ses affects. Les oeuvres présentées rassemblent des aspects écologiques, sociopolitiques, économiques et technologiques avec au centre le débat actuel autour des différences de conception, des matérialités et des fonctions des nuages ou de la nuée.

Wolken haben ohne dass wir uns dessen ­bewusst sind eine für uns elementare Be­deutung. In ihre Flüchtigkeit und unbestimmte Mannigfaltigkeit schreiben wir unsere Wünsche, Hoffnungen und Ängste ein. Die künstlerische »Entdeckung« der Wolke verläuft seit dem Mittelalter, verstärkt im 19. Jahrhundert, parallel zu ihrem Bedeutungszuwachs in den Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften. Im Kontext der theoretischen Bemühungen im 20. Jahrhundert entwickelt sich die Wolke zu einem Modell, um die Komplexität gegenwärtiger Verhältnisse zu ­erfassen. Sie wird zum Sinnbild einer ver­netzten Informationsarchitektur, geopolitischer ­Beziehungen und neuer Raumvorstellungen. Wolken halten sich bekanntlich nicht an Grenzen. Ausstellung und Buch »Die Wolken und die Wolke« beschäftigt sich mit dem Phänomen der Wolke aus einer Perspektive, die über die gewohnten Wolkenbilder hinauszublicken erlaubt. Unter Einbezug unterschied- lichster Medien ­reichen die Beiträge von der künstlerischen Übersetzung des natürlichen ­Motivs bis hin zu der technischen Infrastruktur der Clouds und ihren ­Affekten. Die präsentierten Werke verbinden ­ökologische, soziopolitische, ökonomische und technologische Aspekte. Im Zentrum steht die ­aktuelle Auseinandersetzung mit verschiedenen Auf­fas­sungen, Materialitäten und Funktionen der Wolke(n).
