Dr. Dietrich Gümbel was born in Königsberg, East Prussia (today Kaliningrad). He studied Biology & Geography at the University of Bonn, worked at the Max- Planck-Institute for Limnology in Schlitz/ Germany and received his doctorate of natural science at the University of Giessen.
