A comprehensive explanation of the relationship between formal scholastic metaphysics and the philosophical foundation of mysticism and the Perennial philosophy.

PRAISE FOR IN PURSUIT OF THE INCONCEIVABLE

'Peter Guy Jones succeeds in cutting through the ambiguities, the precarious analogies, the subtle symbolisms, and the rampant prejudices, to lay down clearly, in a logically coherent manner, the core points of spirituality and how it describes reality, not an abstract otherworld.' Bernardo Kastrup, founder of Essentia Foundation, bestselling author of The Idea of the World

"What if the great problems of metaphysics are not insoluble?

For centuries, Western philosophers have struggled with fundamental questions about reality, consciousness, existence and knowledge. The usual conclusion today is that metaphysics produces questions that cannot finally be answered:

In Pursuit of the Inconceivable argues that this conclusion is mistaken.

Peter Guy Jones presents a rational and systematic investigation of metaphysics and shows that the contradictions that repeatedly defeat conventional metaphysical theories are not evidence that metaphysics is impossible. Properly understood, they point towards a solution.

That solution is the nondual philosophy found at the heart of the world's major mystical traditions.

The book argues that Western analytical philosophy and philosophical mysticism are not opponents. When metaphysical theories are subjected to rigorous analysis, extreme or one-sided positions prove logically indefensible. The remaining alternative corresponds closely to the philosophical teachings of figures such as Nagarjuna and Sa?kara and to the wider Perennial tradition.

The result is a rational explanation of both metaphysics and mysticism.

Written for readers prepared to question some of philosophy's most persistent assumptions, In Pursuit of the Inconceivable examines why metaphysical problems seem intractable, why familiar solutions repeatedly fail, and how a different understanding of the structure of these problems allows them to be resolved.

Its central claim is that metaphysics is not an unsolved problem. Its problems are solvable, and their solution provides a rational foundation for the philosophical claims of mysticism."

Über den Autor
Peter Jones has spent most of his working life as a musician and entrepreneur, but as an independent researcher has for the last two decades been researching the relationship between metaphysics, physics, psychology, religion and mysticism. Over this time he has become critical of professional philosophy for its failure to engage with the Perennial philosophy and for the stagnation of the discipline that is its consequence. He writes in the hope of making a contribution to the wider understanding of the Perennial philosophy and a growing appreciation of its plausibility and explanatory power within and beyond philosophy. He lives in West Yorkshire, UK.
