Educado en un entorno de severo catolicismo, esa temprana exposición a la liturgia y los sacramentos moldeó su psique de forma indeleble. Aunque con los años se alejaría del dogma eclesiástico formal, esa profunda sensibilidad mística impregnaría toda su producción literaria.Lector asiduo y erudito incansable de las salas de lectura del British Museum, Waite se convirtió en un puente cultural indispensable para el esoterismo europeo. Gracias a su pericia lingüística, introdujo en el mundo anglosajón los textos fundamentales del hermetismo continental, traduciendo con rigurosidad académica obras clave de autores como Paracelso, Louis Claude de Saint-Martin o Eliphas Lévi. Su vasta labor editorial ordenó y dio respetabilidad a campos de estudio que, hasta entonces, carecían de un método historiográfico [...] de conformarse con ser un mero investigador de biblioteca, este masón de inamovible rectitud moral sintió la necesidad de dar forma institucional a sus convicciones.
