Langston Hughes (1901-1967) was one of the central figures of the Harlem Renaissance and one of the most influential American writers of the twentieth century. A poet, novelist, playwright, essayist, and journalist, Hughes devoted his career to portraying the everyday lives, struggles, and aspirations of African Americans with honesty and dignity. His work spans poetry collections such as The Weary Blues, novels including Not Without Laughter, and numerous essays and plays that shaped modern American literature.
