Über den Autor
Joshua "Gensetsu" Smith, PhD, is a cultural scholar, fine art photographer, and entrepreneur whose work bridges Japanese aesthetics and Western creativity. Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Buffalo, NY, his journey into Japanese culture began at a high school aikido dojo and led to over 13 years living, working, and studying in Japan.
Fluent in Japanese and English, Joshua earned his doctorate in cultural sociology from Osaka University, focusing on traditional and modern Japanese arts. His academic research spans culinary arts, music, and cultural preservation, featured in international journals and conferences.
As a certified Sake Sommelier and owner of Sato Restaurant Group, Joshua and his wife, Executive Chef Satomi Smith, bring authentic Japanese culinary experiences to the United States through celebrated restaurants including SATO and Sato Ramen.
His fine art photography explores wabi-sabi principles-simplicity, stillness, and natural imperfections. As a former adjunct professor and guest lecturer, he shared deep understanding of Japanese culture with students in both the U.S. and Japan.
Beyond photography, Joshua practices shakuhachi (traditional bamboo flute), martial arts with his family, and explores natural beauty worldwide with fellow photographer daughter Miana and son Kazu.
Through traditional arts study-sumi-e painting, shakuhachi, iaido, and Japanese gardens-Joshua discovered how controlled imperfection creates natural harmony. This philosophy infuses his photography teaching, showing students that beauty lies not in perfection but in subtle details that make something unique.
His work appears in galleries and private collections. Online courses and resources available at [...]. Fine art prints at [...].
