This book explores the pathologizing effects of binary assumptions of sex and gender, of male and female. The first section of this book presents narratives from homosexuals, lesbians, cross dressers, transsexuals, and transgender and intersex persons from a range of cultures. The second addresses ways of recognizing these marginalized groups while the third suggests reconstructing gender theory beyond the binaries to allow celebration of multidimensional and contextual gender identities.

Über den Autor

The Editors: Felicity Haynes has written The Art of Argument (1987), The Ethical School (1998), and numerous articles in art education, gender studies, ethics, conceptual change, and philosophy for children. She lectures in philosophy of education and has been Dean of Education and Head of the Graduate School of Education at The University of Western Australia. She is founding Co-Director of The International Foundation for Androgynous Studies.
Tarquam McKenna, a psychotherapist, lectures in drama and art therapy at Edith Cowan University and directs Playback Theatre. Qualified in education, drama, art therapy, and counseling, he is currently researching heteronormativity, rituals of exclusion for gay educators, and is also a Co-Director of The International Foundation for Androgynous Studies.
