Novel in verse: This is his first verse novel, but Joseph Bruchac is an accomplished poet and the writing in this novel is spare, moving, and lovely.
Putting the coronavirus crisis in context: For Malian and indigenous people in America, this pandemic is the latest in a series of threats to their survival. These threats are tied up with European colonization of Native land, and COVID-19 is part of that story.
A girl and her dog: Malian meets Malsum, the local rez dog, in the first pages of the novel and he is her companion as she becomes part of the reservation community herself.
Contemporary indigenous story: Many novels about indigenous people are historical, but this one represents current life on a reservation in the Northeast.
